Buying guide

Buying Banksy: values, editions and authentication

Banksy is the most liquid name in street art. Screenprints released through Pictures on Walls between 2003 and 2017 trade continuously at auction and in private sales, which means a buyer can price a work honestly today and expect to be able to place it again later. That depth is the single biggest reason collectors start here.

The market

Values separate sharply by image and by signature. Iconic images — Girl with Balloon, Love Is in the Air, Di-Faced Tenner — command large premiums over less-known releases from the same period. A signed edition typically trades at a substantial multiple of the unsigned version of the identical image, and small artist-proof runs above that again. Prices corrected from the 2021 peak and have since settled into a steadier range, which has made careful buying more rewarding than it was at the top of the market.

Editions and formats

Most Banksy screenprints were issued in signed editions of 150 to 300 and unsigned editions of 500 to 750, with separate AP, HC and colour-variant runs. Edition number matters less than condition for most images, but low numbers and artist proofs attract a premium. Colour variants and one-off hand-finished works sit in a different price bracket entirely.

Authentication

Pest Control is the only body whose authentication the market accepts for Banksy. A work without a Pest Control certificate — or with a certificate that does not match the print in hand — trades at a heavy discount and is difficult to resell at any price. Always match the certificate number to the work and confirm the certificate has not been separated from a different copy of the edition.

Condition red flags

  • No Pest Control certificate, or a certificate whose number cannot be matched to the work
  • Light-struck or faded colour, particularly in the reds of Girl with Balloon and Love Is in the Air
  • Trimmed sheet edges or a sheet size that does not match the published edition
  • Handling creases, tape residue or hinge damage at the corners from previous framing
  • A price far below comparable recent sales, which almost always signals a documentation or condition problem

Questions collectors ask about Banksy

How much is a Banksy print worth?
It depends almost entirely on the image, whether it is signed, and its condition. Unsigned prints of common images generally sit in the low five figures, signed editions of the same image several times higher, and iconic signed images with strong provenance well into six figures. The only reliable way to value a specific print is to compare sales of the same image, signature type and condition grade over the last twenty-four months.
Is a Banksy print a good investment?
Banksy has the deepest secondary market of any street artist, which makes his prints among the easier works in the category to resell. That is liquidity, not a guarantee of appreciation — prices fell materially after 2021 and individual images have performed very differently. Buy an image you want to live with, at a price supported by recent comparables, and assume a holding period of at least five years.
How do I know if a Banksy print is real?
Through Pest Control. It is the artist's own handling service and the only authentication the market recognises. Ask for the certificate before you commit, check the number against the work, and be sceptical of any seller who offers a gallery certificate or an unrelated appraisal in its place.
What is the difference between signed and unsigned Banksy prints?
Signed editions were smaller and hand-signed by the artist; unsigned editions were larger runs, usually stamped rather than signed. The images are identical, but the signed version consistently trades at a multiple of the unsigned one. For a first acquisition, an unsigned print of a strong image in excellent condition is often better value than a signed print of a weak one.
